چکیده

The formulation and results of a 3-D discrete electron transport simulation are presented for the near-field of a laboratory E x B Hall plasma thruster. For a prescribed magnetic and electric field distribution in the near-field of a Hall thruster, a staggered leapfrog timeintegrating method is utilized to track electrons launched from a simulated cathode. Currently, inter-particle collisions are ignored though collisions with surfaces are treated, and field instabilities are disregarded. Statistics including spatial maps of the relative electron density and mean electron energy as well as electron energy distributions within spatial domains have been obtained.

Investigation of Field Structure and Electron Behavior in the Near-Field of Hall Thrusters

The formulation and preliminary results of a 3-D discrete electron transport simulation are presented. Assuming a magnetic and electric field distribution in the near-field of a Hall thruster, a leapfrog time-integrating method is utilized to track electrons launched from a simulated cathode to obtain statistics including estimates of the Hall parameter and anode/beam current ratios. It is show...

Multiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters

Multiscale Modeling of Hall Thrusters Hall thrusters are efficient space propulsion devices that produce thrust by accelerating quasineutral plasma. The thruster consists of a channel with one end open to the ambient environment. The neutral propellant is injected at the closed end and is ionized by electrons produced by an externally mounted cathode. A radial magnetic field is applied across t...

Parametric Investigation of the Rotating Spoke Instability in Hall Thrusters

This work presents recent results of ongoing investigations into rotating spoke instabilities in Hall thrusters. Recent work by the authors demonstrated large amounts of electron current carried by spokes in the nearanode region in the H6 6-kW laboratory model Hall thruster, and raises the question of whether spokes may play a larger role in electron transport throughout the Hall thruster plume...

Electron Cross-Field Transport in a Low Power Cylindrical Hall Thruster

Conventional annular Hall thrusters become inefficient when scaled to low power. Cylindrical Hall thrusters, which have lower surface-to-volume ratio, are therefore more promising for scaling down. They presently exhibit performance comparable with conventional annular Hall thrusters. Electron cross-field transport in a 2.6 cm miniaturized cylindrical Hall thruster (100 W power level) has been ...

Analytical and numerical investigation of heat and mass transfer effects on magnetohydrodynamic natural convective flow past a vertical porous plate

The aim of this investigation is to study the effect of hall current on an unsteady natural convective flow of a viscous, incompressible, electrically conducting optically thick radiating fluid past a vertical porous plate in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field. The Rosseland diffusion approximation is used to describe the radiative heat flux in the energy equation. Analytical a...
